GOOD TO KNOW

PROPS TO SUPPORT YOUR YOGA PRACTICE (purchased & homemade)

Store purchased yoga props

Available in department and sports stores, yoga studios and online

Yoga straps / belts

Straps are made of  a long, tightly woven fabric (usually cotton). They  make poses more accessible, assist with  lengthening the body, and deepening your stretch.

Straps  typically come in 72" and 96"  (183 cm and 244 cm) lengths. Choose a longer size if you are very tall.

Yoga blocks

Made of styrofoam, cork or wood, blocks allow you to stay longer and more comfortably in poses. They can and also help with stability and alignment.

Dimensions are typically 8.5 x 5 x 3"

(22 x  130 x 70 cm).

Yoga bolsters / pillows

Bolsters are long, firm, cylindrical or rectangular pillows. They help cushion and  support the body, particularly in restorative postures.

Comes in various lengths  and diameters.

Homemade yoga prop alternatives

Household items can be used as inexpensive substitutes

Yoga strap / belt alternatives

Use a long rectangular scarf, thick wide ribbon, tie, or soft belt (eg. from a bathrobe). Should be made of non-stretchy material.

Dimensions: choose one at least 1.5 "/ 4 cm wide and  60" / 153 cm long.

Block alternatives

Use a pair of rolled up bath towels, thin blankets, or paper towel rolls. Secure with elastic bands or ribbons to prevent unravelling.

Bolster alternatives

Use thick blankets or rolled up bath towels, fastened with elastic bands or ribbons. Small or full-sized stacked pillows work well too.

Other useful props

Chair

A sturdy, stationary chair can be used for stability when learning balance poses. Many postures can be modified to a seated position, making yoga more accessible.

Blankets & towels

Blankets and towels are wonderful multipurpose props. When folded flat, they can serve to cushion wrists, knees and ankles, elevate the hips in seated forward bends, and make prolonged seated meditation more comfortable.
